Why Does Rain Smell SO Good?
By Tim Walker
There's nothing like stepping outside on a rainy spring morning or sitting on the porch during a thunderstorm. We all know that distinctive fresh smell of a rain shower. But what is that smell? I think I always assumed it was a mixture of wet grass and dirt.
The smell is usually strongest when it rains following a period of hot, dry weather.
Now, scientists at MIT have pinpointed exactly how "the smell" works. They used high speed cameras to record raindrops and catch the phenomenon in action. Pretty cool video! (You can also read the original article, here).
