The January Job Boom
by Andy Moss
Many companies slow or pause hiring at the end of each year. There’s a practical reason for this. A lot of people take vacation time around the holidays and because the hiring process usually involves several managers or a series of interviews, it can be difficult to get everyone in the same room at the same time.
Therefore, it’s common for companies to put off hiring decisions until January. Many companies also have replenished budgets and new projections that will help them guide their hiring choices for the year. For that reason, you can usually expect January to be a good time to start applying for jobs.
2017, however may prove to be a better year than most to be a job-seeker. Election years bring a lot of uncertainty, no matter who is elected. A lot of companies, and even the stock market, hold back on making big decisions while they wait for the results. Now that the election is decided, many companies will make a big hiring push. In fact, recent surveys have shown higher consumer confidence in the market. That could bode well for the economy in 2017.
This year is also shaping up to be a job-seekers market. Just as a sellers market makes your home more valuable and can drive up the price when you’re looking to sell, a job-seekers market means employees are in greater demand, which can help to bolster salaries. In fact, industries like engineering and Information Technology have negative unemployment rates, meaning there are more open jobs than job-seekers.
These factors all point to an enticing year for employment. If you’re looking for a job or thinking about switching careers or employers, now is the perfect time to dust off your resume and start applying for jobs.
M Force is here to help you through the process. As a job-seeker, working with a recruiter is free. So, what are you waiting for? Give us a call and get in on the January job boom!
