Recruiting: A Commodity?
By Matt Blankenship
I have been working in the recruiting industry for roughly ten years. In some professions that is merely a blip on the map of your career. To put it in perspective, the average tenure of a recruiter is 11 months. So either I am a glutton for punishment, or I've managed to find my niche. Over the years I have seen the market change as the same recruitment companies advertise how they will beat anyone’s price.
And I have also seen these bargain basement companies come and go. Why? What we do is not a commodity. I am a seasoned professional that works hard to provide for his family and takes what he does seriously. Just because my price is a little higher and I do not send fifteen resumes for every position that we recruit on does not mean I am not putting forth the effort. So let me explain my stance.
Say I am a company like Ford Motors. I have a company that I have asked to fabricate and assemble car doors for me. In the last steps of our negotiations I say “Hey I need you to build me four car doors and I will chose which one I want.” Sounds crazy but think about it. So the vendor says to me “well why not take the first one. “ And I say I want a few to pick through” I think by this point you get where I am going.
As a "seasoned professional” I always do my best to put quality first. This means that when you as a client give me a job description I am going to send you the closest match to what you are looking for, with my knowledge of the market. So when you ask me for three or more resumes to compare that’s why my rate is always higher. It goes back to the car doors. If I am going to build you three car doors it is not going to cost the same as one. What we do has a price. What we do is a service for companies needing professionals like myself that are networked in certain job markets. I could easily send four to five resumes that were nowhere close or people I have not taken the time to interview but I have more respect for my craft than that. I am not a commodity. I am a dedicated professional that wants to so the job right the first time so the next time you call me because you trust I will get the job do right the first time.
