Memorial Day and What it Means to me
by David Moir
First a few facts about Memorial Day:
- Originally known as Decoration Day, Memorial Day originated in the years following the Civil War
- Memorial Day became an official federal holiday in 1971
- Observed on the last Monday of May, Memorial Day began as a way to honor those who gave their lives in service to our country
On Memorial Day I try to reflect on the sacrifices made by military service members, their spouses and children. I have family members that have served and my father-in-law was a retired military officer. I am very thankful and humble for their service! I also take this time to reflect about the sacrifices all people have made with their other service to our country.
For most of us, Memorial Day is a welcome day off from work spent gathered with family and friends. It is our way to know summer is here.
Since I mainly write about work, Memorial Day also reminds me about all those, especially veterans who have helped grow our community with great businesses. I love to support local businesses because there is a good feeling I get knowing they need me and I need them. I work for a small specialized staffing firm here that started with the vision of three “local” guys.
So this Memorial Day I honor those fallen to protect us and those who have gone before us to help make our town better. Happy Memorial Day and let the summer begin!!!!
