15 Family Things to Do to Cure the Winter Blues
By Krista Jones
Winter is here. It’s always a tough time because the cold and early darkness keep my family from doing a lot of our normal outdoor activities. So if you’re like me, you need some tips for keeping your kids and family active this time of year. After all, a healthy work-life balance can reap rewards at the office too.
So, here are some ideas to keep you looking forward to some of those days this winter. You will find that most of these ideas are very economical or may be completely “free”! So get out your calendar and start scheduling!
1) Scavenger Hunt
Provide a list for each person in the car of things to find, or play “I Spy”. Pack a snack and have fun! You can also play these games at home.
2) Sporting Event
Take in a local High School, College or Minor league indoor sporting event such as basketball, hockey, etc. (Ice Bears, UT Men’s and Women’s Basketball to name a few!).
3) Snow Day
Grab your gloves and a couple of able-bodied friends for some good old fashioned snow games. Find a good hill for sledding and snow ball fights!
4) Help Out
Get some perspective by helping out those needier than yourself. You can always choose to volunteer at a local non-profit, but consider lending a hand to an elderly or sick neighbor by shoveling their driveway, offer to pick up groceries or even drive them to the store.
5) Take a Hike
Campsites offer dirt cheap or free rates during winter months, so if you are up for a challenge, take a weekend camping trip or even just a day hike.
6) Movie Night
Host a movie night from your living room. Stream one straight to your TV or invite friends to bring their own flicks. Pop popcorn, make hot chocolate or make your favorite drinks and curl up and enjoy the show.
7) Pot Luck
Invite friends or family over for a game night and potluck dinner. They can bring their own games and a dish to share.
Moving things around in your home can be fun! Try hanging your pictures in different places, rearranging your furniture, or dreaming up new ideas by searching for ideas online. If you’re feeling particularly adventurous, let your kids refresh their rooms too!
Pick an event you recently attended that you have lots of pictures from and make a book. You can choose to do this online using a website like mypublisher or make a scrapbook with printed photos and mementos from the event. These are great things to do as a family or use this project as a gift for someone.
Bake an old “family recipe” or learn to bake something new that you can make a “new” family recipe!
11) Video Game Marathon
Pick a day and set up a little competition with your spouse or kids and learn to play that game you don’t know, be willing to learn and have fun! Make a day of it!
12) Indoor Obstacle Course
Use pillows, toys, furniture or other objects to burn off a little energy and have fun!
13) Indoor Fort
This is great if you have kids or just feel adventurous. Transform your living room into a fun fort – just use your imagination!
14) Have a “Summer Day”
Dress in fun summer clothes, play music that reminds you of summer/beach, make tropical drinks or fruit smoothies, and for the little kids – fill up the bathtub and put on bathing suits and “go swimming”!
15) Plan your Summer Vacation
Don’t like thinking about winter at all? Then think about summer! Check out websites, magazines and plan a trip with family or friends!
What else would you add to this list? We're always up for taking on a new adventure at my house!
