10 Things We Learned About Hiring from Lane Kiffin’s Awkward Video
By Tim Walker
By now you’ve probably seen newly-minted FAU football coach Lane Kiffin’s awkward (to say the least!) recruitment/hype video.
There are a lot of things we can learn here. Especially when it comes to hiring and recruiting talent (that’s what Lane is trying to do here…right???)
1. Potential employees can tell when you’re not into it
It’s really hard to fake enthusiasm. If the boss doesn’t like his job, that’s going to come through loud and clear to employees and potential employees.
2. Dress the part
If you expect to hire professional employees, you’ve got to look the part. Prepare to conduct an interview in the same way that you’d want a potential hire to prepare to be interviewed.
3. Be Prepared
Sure, this may be your first time doing an interview or hiring an employee. You may just as nervous as the person on the other side of the table. However, a dose of confidence goes a long way. You got this!
4. Don’t be afraid to show your personality (if you have one)
Money isn’t the only reason people take jobs. They also want to know that the company’s culture is a good fit. Make sure that comes through during an interview!
5. Know your strengths
Emphasize what makes your company great and what sets you apart from the rest.
6. Know your weaknesses
If you’re really not good at making recruitment videos, try something else.
7. Be honest about what you can offer
Startups shouldn’t market themselves to employees the same way that established companies do. Know where you fit and don’t oversell your capabilities.
8. Have a plan and execute it well
Hiring good people takes time, money an effort. Don’t wing it.
9. Don’t be afraid to abandon a bad plan
Don’t be so committed to an idea that you can’t, or won’t, abandon it if it fails. For example, don’t hire someone who bombed an interview just because their resume looks great on paper.
10. Honor Your Commitments.
